Jacksonville, FL—Beaver Street Fisheries, Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, voluntarily recalled 5-7 lb Tuna Loins with the lot number 928378, after it was discovered that they have the potential to be contaminated with high levels of histamine. The FDA announced the food safety recall on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, as a means of protecting consumers from possible health risks.
According to the FDA news release, “High levels of histamine can produce an allergic reaction called scombroid poisoning when the fish is consumed. The most common symptoms of scombroid poisoning are: tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, facial swelling, rash, hives and itchy skin, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. However, individuals may experience symptoms differently.”
Beaver Street Fisheries, Inc. distributed the tuna loins to wholesalers and distributors in the following states: Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
They were sent out in 20 lb bulk cartons with individual vacuum-sealed packages containing the 5-7 lb tuna loins. The product’s lot number 928378, along with a SN# 43910, Best By: 07/06/12, UPC code 10075391967918 and item number 6217408, were affixed to the cartons.
The recall was initiated after Beaver Street Fisheries, Inc. received a report from one of its distributors, alleging, “one of their customers had reported three incidents of possible histamine scombroid poisoning with symptoms of rash on the face, vomiting, diarrhea and one individual had reported having low blood pressure.”
The company subsequently placed the tuna loins on HACCP HOLD and contacted the FDA, as well as all known customers. The Florida-based company and FDA are expected to investigate where the contamination might have originated.
Consumers have been urged to contact their local market to obtain a full reimbursement. Additionally, individuals with questions or concerns were advised to call (800) 874-6426 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, and ask to speak with the Beaver Street Fisheries, Inc. Quality Control department.
