New York, NY—Elevated levels of lead in some older building in New York have been discovered, prompting officials to warn residents to run their taps for 30 seconds before drinking water, use it to cook or to make baby formula, reported by WABC.
The city Department of Environmental Protection reported that the city’s water supply, which collects water from 19 upstate reservoirs, is basically lead-free, as it is tested a half million times a year at the reservoir and hundreds of times at sampling stations. But, this years tests, which were conducted from June to September, found 14 percent (or 30 out of 222 tested building) showed lead levels that exceed the accepted threshold.
Action is required to be taken by local utilities if 10 percent or more of the tested building show lead levels over 15 parts per billion, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mandates.
Officials have contributed the excessive levels of lead to the lead pipes and fixtures typically found in building over 40-years-old.
Exposure to too much lead can cause brain, kidney, nervous system and red blood cell damage.
