Kansas City, KS– A Spring Hill football player tragically died during a football game on Thursday, October 28, 2010, when he was hit while intercepting a pass. The football player reportedly had just been cleared from a concussion he sustained three weeks earlier, as reported by NBC Action News.
This was the first game Nathan Stiles played in since his medical clearance. Nathan’s father reportedly saw his son intercept an Osawatomie pass and was subsequently hit by the opposing team. Nathan then walked to the sidelines where he collapsed.
Spring Hill head coach Anthony Orrick told the Miami County Republic, “It was just a routine play. I don’t think there was anything special. I think he just hit the ground pretty hard with his head. He came on the sideline and told one of my assistants, ‘my head is really hurting.’ He sat down on the bench. He then stood up, but his legs went underneath him and collapsed there.”
Miami County EMS was called to Osawatomie’s Lynn Dickey Field at 8:23 p.m. Nathan was rushed to University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas by helicopter ambulance for treatment of his injuries.
The family’s pastor said Nathan died from bleeding on his brain, which caused a seizure and his organs to shut down. Nathan never regained consciousness once he collapsed on the sidelines.
The National Federation of State High School Associations reported there were seven football-related deaths in the 2008-2009 school year, which marked a seven-year high.
