Lebanon, OH—Seven people were injured when an explosion occurred on the night of Tuesday, Nov. 2 at a Lebanon apartment complex. The blast and fire were reported to authorities around 9 p.m., according to information provided by WLWT.
Fire rescue crews were dispatched to the 800 block of Franklin Road where an explosion and blaze broke out at Steeplechase Apartments.
Eyewitnesses compared the sound of the explosion to that of a large bus slamming into a building, noting that flames shot up 40 to 50 feet within moments of the blast.
While as many as 30 tenants were likely displaced as a result of the inferno, firefighters alleged 10 units sustained heavy damage or were completely destroyed.
Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, along with medical helicopters, arrived at the scene and rushed two severely burned victims to Miami Valley Hospital. The victims were identified as Erica and Rachel Vencill, mother and daughter.
Five others, including three children, were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The identities of those victims were not released.
Tenants displaced in the unfortunate explosion and fire were transported to the Turtlecreek Fire Department, where they were granted temporary shelter. The Red Cross is allegedly helping a dozen residents find shelter as well.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office would not confirm suspicions that a lit cigarette and natural gas leak were to blame for the explosion.
A full investigation into the Lebanon blast and inferno is expected to be underway.
