Phoenix, AZ—A Louisiana man who was shot in the eye and sustained damage beyond repair has reached a $2 million settlement with the Maricopa County, for a road rage incident with two of the county’s deputies, as reported by MSNBC.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved the payment to settle the lawsuit on Wednesday, November 3, 2010.
On Sept. 6, 2005, the victim, Richard Naquin Jr. was working rescue and relief operations in the Orleans Parish for an environmental contractor, when he was involved in a road rage incident with two deputies in an unmarked SUV, according to court filings. Naquin was reportedly driving on a highway outside of New Orleans, when an unmarked SUV pulled up next to him and a man in the passenger side of the SUV rolled down the window and pointed a rifle at him. Fearing for his life, Naquin sped off. The SUV pulled up behind him and turned on their emergency light under the grill, before stopping behind him at an intersection. Naquin got out of his vehicle to ask the SUV occupants what they wanted when he was shot in the left eye by the deputy.
Naquin’s eye is reportedly damaged beyond repair and will require a prosthetic eyeball.
The unidentified deputy who shot Naquin is no longer employed by the sheriff’s office.
