Fort Myers, FL—At least 8,000 customers are without gas in Naples and Fort Myers following a gas line explosion, which left a construction worker in critical condition on Thursday afternoon, November 11, 2010, as reported by 10 News and the Marco Eagle.

Police officials reported that around 1:45 p.m., a bulldozer driven by Mario Santos, 30, of Bonita Springs was widening Colonial Boulevard when his machinery hit an eight-inch gas main, sending flames at least 50 feet into the air.

Santos suffered burns to 50 percent of his body. He was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where he is listed in serious condition. A second worker was also injured, but he was treated at the scene by responding emergency crews.

The workers are reportedly employed by Posen Construction.

The gas outage affected customers of TECO Peoples Gas, leaving thousands without gas and causing many businesses to close their doors.

A full investigation into the construction accident is underway.
