Methane Fumes at Western NY Farm Killed Schwab Family Farm Worker

Buffalo, NY— Two men were overcome by Methane fumes while trying to clear a blockage in a tank trailer, leaving one of the men dead. On Tuesday afternoon, November 9, 2010, emergency crews rushed to the Schwab Family Farm in the Cattaraugus County town of Freedom, which is about 40 miles southwest of Buffalo, as reported by Syracuse.com

According to state police, Edward Kelsch, 46, was trying to clear a blockage inside the tank trailer, which is used to spread manure. While he was trying to remove the blockage, the deadly fumes overcame him. Timothy Schwab, 27, climbed into the tanker and was also consumed by the fumes.

Other workers reportedly pulled the men from the tanker.

Schwab was rushed to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital in Springville, where medical professionals pronounced him dead.

Kelsch was rushed to a Buffalo hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition.

It is unknown if police officials are conducting investigations into the work-related accident.
