Needham, MA– Controversy is swirling around the Needham High School varsity soccer team as four seniors and a freshman were suspended, along with their coach, for alleged hazing activities, as reported by The Boston Channel.
The players were accused of blindfolding the underclassman players, leading them around the field on dog leashes and throwing pies in their faces in October. The coach was put on leave for not reporting the incident right away.
Many students are agreeing with the high school’s decision to suspend the players, while others are calling the discipline an “overreaction” to a tradition that has been ongoing for years.
One parent, Todd White told WHDH, “My daughter is one of the freshman girls. She loves these seniors, supports these seniors, and is mortified that in any way these seniors are harmed, their college careers are harmed.” White’s daughter reportedly got a pie thrown in her face, but he claims no one was hurt and it was a misguided attempt at teambuilding, rather than hazing.
The parents of the suspended players asked a judge to overturn the suspension, but the judge denied the parents’ request to let the girls play in the state tournament against Brockton on Tuesday.
The Needham School Superintendent issued the statement: “The Needham High School Community is saddened about the recent events involving the girls’ soccer team. The high school administration, staff, students and families urge the local Needham community to support our team as they face Brockton tonight.”
Needham police are investigating the incident.
