Dayton, NJ—Somfy Systems Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, voluntarily recalled Motorized Awnings due to shock hazards associated with them. The CPSC announced the recall, which affects approximately 4,600 units, on Friday, Nov. 19, 2010.

New Jersey-based Somfy Systems initiated the product safety recall upon discovering that the awning motor’s power cable has the potential to break while the awning is being opened or closed manually. While no injuries or adverse events have been reported as of yet, consumers using the awnings run the risk of being electrocuted as a result of the defect.

According to the CPSC news release, “This recall involves the Sunea CMO RTS motor used to operate retractable awnings. The awning motor heads are silver and black-colored. “Somfy” is printed on the motor head. Motor heads that are entirely black in color are not included in this recall. The Sunea CMO RTS model numbers included in this recall are 525A2, 535A2 and 550R2. The model number is printed on a label on the motor tube.”

The recalled product, which was manufactured in France, was sold at awnings dealers and retailers nationwide between December 2009 and September 2010.

Consumers have been urged to cease use of the potentially dangerous awning motors and the awning’s manual crank “and unplug and/or pull the circuit breaker to protect against anyone using the awning.”

Consumers have also been advised to contact Somfy Systems at (800) 637-6639 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to obtain a complimentary installation or replacement awning motor, or find out more information regarding the recall.
