Wabash, IN—A five-vehicle collision Monday afternoon, November 15, 2010, resulted in injuries ranging from non-life threatening to fatal. The deadly chain-reaction crash occurred on State Road 13, south of County Road 200 North, in Wabash, according to information provided by TheIndyChannel.com.
Reports indicated an Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) work crew closed State Route 13 down to one lane while the road was being sealed before 2 p.m. Monday.
According to Indiana State Police, a semi truck was traveling north on S.R. 13 when the driver failed to stop for traffic and slammed into a sport utility vehicle.
The SUV, which was stopped in the northbound lane, was apparently waiting for the flagman to clear southbound traffic at the time.
On impact, the SUV plowed into a minivan, causing it to hit the back of a car. The car then went on to strike a pickup truck.
Though emergency medical services (EMS) personnel were dispatched to the scene of the Wabash pile-up, 58-year-old minivan driver, Roger Prater succumbed to his traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three victims in the SUV, identified as 74-year-old Wanda Frehese, 43-year-old Monica Harrell and 43-year-old Marcia Summers, suffered minor injuries. They were all flown to Parkview Hospital via medical helicopter.
Vicki Ley, the 55-year-old driver of the car involved, as well as Phillip Hill, the 44-year-old pickup truck driver, sustained non-life threatening injuries in the chain-reaction crash. They were rushed to Wabash County Hospital for treatment.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, who remained unidentified, did not suffer any injuries in the collision. Reports did not specify if the semi truck driver was cited in connection with the wreck.
Investigations are expected to be underway.
