Orlando, FL—An empty carbon dioxide canister exploded and injured a garbage collector who tossed into the back of the garbage truck and then proceeded to compact the garbage. One worker was injured during the explosion on Monday, November 22, 2010, as reported by WESH.
Police officials dispatched a robot to the scene to ensure that the threat was over. Nearby homes and residents were evacuated and told to remain inside.
It was later determined that the empty canister, which was still under pressure, was to blame. When the garbage truck compacted the trash, the bottom of the canister blew out.
A 25-year-old garbage man was injured after emptying the can of trash and subsequent explosion. He was reportedly treated for cuts and scrapes.
Police officers believe the incident was not intentional. Orange County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jim Solomons said, “Sometimes people don’t think after they throw away a propane bottle or a pressurized container, and when that is compressed, that could be a pretty big bang.”
The garbage truck was not damaged, and the driver and new worker continued the route.
