Los Angeles, CA– A head-on collision along California Highway 238 near Gorman left two people dead and several others critically injured on Tuesday, November 23, 2010. The fatal collision involved a truck that was carrying inmates from a Los Angeles fire crew, which took place around 2:20 p.m., as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
According to officials the boxy-type truck was traveling eastbound on the highway near Quail Lake Road, when a Subaru Forester drove across the roadway and crossed into the oncoming lanes of traffic, where it collided head-on with a truck that was transporting the inmates.
The impact of the collision caused the truck to roll about 150 feet and eject several of the inmates from the vehicle. Several others were trapped inside the wreckage, which required special equipment to free them.
A dozen inmates and a county firefighter who was driving the truck were inside the truck at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Subaru and an inmate were pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency rescue crews. The injured were transported to several area hospitals for treatment of their critical injuries. It was unclear how many people were injured.
The identities of those killed were not available. The driver of the Subaru was reportedly between 75 and 85-years-old.
A full investigation is underway.
