Indianapolis, IN—Police are investigating a violent hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a 16-year-old Indianapolis girl. The deadly accident, which was believed to have involved alcohol, occurred just before 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, as reported by TheIndyChannel.com.
According to Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson, 19-year-old Kayla Ratliff was behind the wheel of an SUV and was stopped at a traffic light when a Nissan Altima slammed into her vehicle.
A passenger in the SUV, 16-year-old Megan Ratliff, was partially ejected as the vehicle began to overturn. The teenager succumbed to her traumatic injuries at the scene.
Sgt. Thompson stated, “It did set the sport-utility vehicle on its side, and we believe when that action took place, that’s when the passenger was killed.”
The driver of the Nissan fled the scene on foot. Although police did not have a description of the hit-and-run driver, the Nissan’s owner arrived at the scene, located on Indianapolis’ south side, to speak with officials.
“We don’t know how the owner became aware that the vehicle became involved in the accident, but (the car) had not been reported stolen… As far as I know… the owner of the vehicle has cooperated with investigators,” said Thompson.
Reports indicated open containers of alcohol were discovered in the hit-and-run driver’s Nissan following the fatal wreck.
Kayla Ratliff was rushed to Methodist Hospital to be treated for her undisclosed injuries. She was released from the medical center Monday morning.
Investigations into the Indianapolis collision are expected to be underway.
