Saddle River, NJ—American Tack & Hardware Co. Inc. (AmerTac) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voluntarily recalled Forever-Glo® Cylinder Nite Lites due to fire and burn risks associated with them. The CPSC announced the product safety recall, which affects approximately 272,000 units, on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2010.
While no injuries have been reported in connection with the product, AmerTac received word of nine instances in which the defective night lights began “smoking, burning, melting and/or charring.”
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that an electrical short circuit in the Forever-Glo® Cylinder Nite Lite can cause the product to overheat and smolder or melt.
If this occurs, a fire could be sparked. Additionally, consumers using the night lights run the risk of suffering burns.
According to the CPSC news release, “The recalled Forever-Glo® Cylinder Nite Lite is a cylinder shaped night light with a white base and clear top that plugs into the wall. Only Model Number 71107 with a manufacturer code of SY is included in this recall. The model number and manufacturer code are printed on the back of the night light. The light measures about 4 inches in height by 1- 1/2 inches wide and is about 1 inch deep.”
The potentially dangerous night lights were sold at hardware stores, lighting showrooms and home centers nationwide between May 2009 and September 2010. The product cost approximately $5.
Consumers have been urged to cease use of the recalled Forever-Glo® Cylinder Nite Lites and if necessary, unplug them from wall sockets. AmerTac also advises consumers to contact them at (800) 420-7511 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to learn how to obtain a full reimbursement. The company may also be contact via the Internet at www.amertac.com or www.recall-center.com.
