Larry Davis knows the cause of his mesothelioma—and he knows his odds. A particularly aggressive cancer, mesothelioma is almost always caused by asbestos exposure. Davis learned that long ago, after his father—exposed to asbestos at a box manufacturing plant in New Haven, Conn.—died from the disease at age 56.
At 65, Davis has outlived his dad, but he knows time is short. While mesothelioma can take decades after exposure to materialize, once detected, the prognosis is invariably grim. There is no cure, not even an effective long-term treatment.
That hasn’t stopped Davis, a longtime runner, from slowing down. Even now, his pace is relentless, both in battling his own mesothelioma and in raising awareness for the asbestos related disease. It is still often considered, erroneously, a disease of the past, even though mesothelioma lawyers are as busy as ever.
A race director in Florida, Davis organized the 2010 South Florida Wishing Well Miles for Meso 5K & Tribute Walk, which brought 300 participants out on an unusually cold morning in February—and raised more than $15,000 for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
Davis is taking his mission to raise mesothelioma awareness on the road. He joined “standing cyclist” Frank Cavaluzzi on the final leg of a recent ride from Pennsylvania to Washington, D.C., to get the word out about asbestos and mesothelioma.
He wants people to know that mesothelioma strikes not only those exposed to asbestos years ago, it also threatens to someday afflict countless others due to the continuing presence of asbestos in older structures across the country. Improper asbestos removal and disposal—enabling asbestos fibers to escape into the air, where they can easily be inhaled by anyone nearby—is another source of concern, say mesothelioma lawyers and experts.
Davis’s goal is to make people aware of the risks, so they can help prevent them and fight for more effective asbestos controls, safeguards and penalties.
Meanwhile, Davis’s runs and message are being heard. The Knights of Columbus presented him with a $1,000 check for his South Florida Miles for Meso 8K. Some of the proceeds from September’s King of the Hill 5K Challenge in south Florida were earmarked for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation.
Mesothelioma may have changed Davis’ life, and it has certainly imperiled it. But the deadly disease has not dampened his enthusiasm—or his competitive spirit. In September, Davis ran the USA 20 K Championships in his hometown of New Haven, Conn., in under 2 hours, crossing the line at 1 hour, 54 minutes.
Not too shabby for a newly minted senior citizen.
