The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recently issued a press release detailing statistics from its fiscal year 2010 (available at http://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/newsroom/release/11-23-10.cfm). The EEOC is the federal agency charged with enforcing federal civil rights laws that protect America’s workers from discrimination and retaliation, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Pay Act of 1963, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 and Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
The EEOC reports that it has both hired more employees and dedicated substantial resources to better train its employees. As a result, the EEOC ended its fiscal year 2010 (in September) with 86,338 pending charges–an increase of less than one percent–despite receiving a record 99,922 charges the same year. The EEOC also reports achieving historic monetary relief for individuals, having secured more than $319 million.
The EEOC also announced that its mediation program resolved a record number of matters and that the agency has expanded its reach to underserved communities by providing educational training and public outreach events to approximately 250,000 people.
