Broward County, FL—A semi-truck slammed into two cars early Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, claiming two lives and leaving five others with various injuries. According to information provided by the Palm Beach Post, the Florida Highway Patrol is conducting a full probe to determine whether illegal street racing played a role in the double-fatal collision.
Reports indicated an Acura Integra, driven by 18-year-old Raymon Garcia, and a Honda Civic, driven by 18-year-old Angel Lazo, were stopped in the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 for unknown reasons.
Around 12:30 a.m., a Freightliner truck driven by 42-year-old Placid Ferdinand noticed the vehicles, which were positioned parallel to one another, but was unable to avoid a collision with them.
The tractor-trailer violently rear-ended both vehicles about six miles north of Interstate 75. Two backseat passengers in the Integra, 19-year-old Ileana E. Mira and 15-year-old Darion Ledesma were sadly killed on impact.
Both drivers and a passenger in the Civic, 19-year-old Matthew A. Forman, were rushed to Broward General Medical Center after the wreck. Garcia suffered critical injuries in the crash.
A passenger in the Integra, 19-year-old Anthony Perez was transported to North Broward Medical Center, where he too was listed in critical condition.
While Ferdinand, the 18-wheeler’s driver, managed to escape injury in the crash, his passenger, Sandy Kay Ferdinand, 47, suffered minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene.
According to FHP Sgt. Mark Wysocky, troopers shut down an illegal drag race gathering in the same area of U.S. 27 as the deadly wreck just last week.
“We are investigating to see if there was some sort of racing going on… We are not sure yet,” Sgt. Wysocky contended
The trooper noted, “You have the risk of being involved in a crash, in killing other people, or anyone standing and watching or observing.”
No charges have been filed as of yet. Investigations into the unfortunate Broward multi-vehicle crash are expected to be underway.
