San Francisco, CA (San Francisco Injury Lawyer News)—An elderly pedestrian became involved in a tragic collision with a UCSF shuttle bus Wednesday, November 17, 2010, causing her to suffer fatal injuries. The deadly traffic accident occurred at the intersection of Geary Street and Leavenworth Street in San Francisco, Calif., at 12:27 p.m. While UCSF Transportation Services director Jon Gledhill alleged the bus driver had a clean driving record, a full investigation into the fatal pedestrian-involved bus crash was expected to be underway, according to information provided by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Reports indicated a 65-year-old woman was crossing Geary, heading southbound, when a UCSF shuttle bus that was traveling northbound on Leavenworth made a left turn. Upon doing so, the bus struck the pedestrian. The shuttle was apparently running the “blue route,” which goes from the Parnassus campus to San Francisco General Hospital to the Mission Bay campus and then to Mount Zion Hospital, at the time. While the driver and passengers aboard the shuttle bus managed to escape injury in the collision, the unidentified pedestrian was not so fortunate, sadly succumbing to her traumatic injuries at the scene.
According to data collected through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, California had the highest tally of pedestrian fatalities, 563, last year. Twenty of those pedestrians were killed in San Francisco accidents. San Francisco Police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said, “The driver is cooperating with the police investigators.” The San Francisco Police Department’s hit and run detail is conducting a full probe into the fatal bus-pedestrian accident.
