Arlington, VA—The driver of a SuperShuttle van faces hit-and-run charges after he crashed into at least six vehicles during a Monday morning, Dec. 13, 2010 commute from Arlington to Dulles International Airport (IAD). According to information provided by the Washington Post, the speeding driver, who was arrested in connection with the series of accidents, told law enforcement officers he “did it to be famous.”
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller reported that at around 9:25 a.m., 25-year-old Muhammad Teshale was operating a blue SuperShuttle vehicle in the westbound lanes of Interstate 66 in Arlington.
At some point, the shuttle van sideswiped the passenger side of a Dodge Charger two times before hitting the back of a Chrysler Pacifica and a taxi. The two vehicles that were rear-ended careened off the highway on impact.
A 33-year-old Centreville woman was driving the Pacifica at the time. The motorist and her 1-year-old daughter were rushed to Arlington Hospital to be treated for minor injuries after the collision.
Without ever stopping, Teshale continued to drive the SuperShuttle along I-66, in the direction of the airport. The shuttle van went on to rear-end a 2006 Mercedes C240 at the Dulles Connector Road and apparently hit two other unspecified vehicles.
According to authorities, Teshale was operating the SuperShuttle at speeds of 90 to 95 mph at times. The hit-and-run SuperShuttle driver was apprehended at Dulles, where officials found the damaged blue shuttle van.
So far, Fairfax County officials have charged Teshale with one count of hit and run.
Virginia State Police, Arlington County police and Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police are investigating the string of motor vehicle collisions.
Additionally, SuperShuttle spokesman Ken Testani contended company officials would be conducting their own probe into the episode.
