Detroit, MI– The A&E Network and the television show, “The First 48” were sued on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, by the family of a 7-year-old Detroit girl who was shot and killed during a police raid filmed by a reality TV crew, as reported by The Detroit News.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court seven moths after the raid killed Aiyana Stanley-Jones. The filings stated, “’The First 48’ camera crew was present at a home on Lillibridge Street on May 16, when Detroit police detectives, using a no-knock warrant, threw a flash grenade into the home and burst through the door. Moments after the grenade was launched, a police gun discharged, and a bullet fatally struck Aiyana.” Some have speculated that the camera crews made police overly aggressive during the raid.

The lawsuit accused A&E, the reality TV show, production company Kirkstall Road Enterprises Inc. and the Detroit Police Department of leading an illegal raid into the girl’s home, which led to her death.

The suit also alleges negligence and a cover-up by the Detroit Police Department, who originally placed the blame on the girl’s grandmother for grabbing the police officer’s gun. Lawyer’s representing the girl’s parents, Charles Jones and Dominika Stanley, and grandmother Mertilla Jones, believes the gun was fired inside the home, contradicting officer’s claims.
