West Palm Beach, FL—After facing years of scrutiny, drop-side cribs have been outlawed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, according to a recent Associated Press report. The CPSC announced that it would bar the manufacture, sale and resale of the dangerous cribs on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, with the new standard set to take effect in June of 2011.
In the last decade, faulty drop-side cribs have been linked to the deaths of 32 infants and toddlers. Reports indicated the cribs might have played a roll in an additional 14 child fatalities.
In the last five years, more than 9 million drop-side cribs have been recalled due to defects that leave children vulnerable to strangulation and suffocation risks.
According to New York Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, “These products are deadly, and this critically needed action will prevent further senseless deaths.”
Come June 2011, all cribs will be required to have fixed sides. The new standard is also setting the foundation for more meticulous safety testing to be conducted on cribs before they are placed on the market.
As kids get older, they have a tendency to move and jump around in their cribs more, thus applying a greater amount of pressure on them. New safety tests seek to make sure the cribs can withstand more force so infants and toddler using them remain protected.
The standard will also mandate that cribs be labeled in a more efficient and clear manor, to deter potential mis-assembly issues that could create safety hazards for children.
CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum stated, “I believe these new standards will markedly reduce crib-related hazards and help to ensure that young children sleep more safely in their cribs.”
