Huron County, MI—A Sebewaing Township collision between a pickup truck and a school bus serving Unionville-Sebewaing Area (USA) Schools was involved in a collision that injured four students. The accident occurred along M-25 (Unionville Road) around 9:29 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, according to information provided by the Huron Daily Tribune.

Reports indicated 43-year-old Toni Lynn Nitz was behind the wheel of her 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck and was traveling westbound on Bach Road, when the snowy roadway conditions prevented her from being able to bring her vehicle to a stop at M-25.

The pickup truck careened through the intersection, T-boning a school bus, which was northbound on M-25 at the time. The bus, operated by USA Schools bus driver Kurt W. Bach, 58, subsequently veered off the road and into a ditch.

In connection with the Huron County collision, USA Schools officials stated, “The bus driver did an excellent job in guiding the bus out of harm’s way and keeping the students calm. Our main concern is the safety of our students and keeping the lines of communication open to the parents of the students who were on the bus at the time of the accident.”

There were approximately 25 students on the school bus when the pickup truck hit it. Four of those students were taken to Pigeon-based Scheurer Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Neither Nitz nor her two unidentified passengers suffered any injuries in the wreck. Nevertheless, Michigan State Police Trooper Jeff Rucinski issued Nitz a citation for her failure to stop at a signed intersection.
