Virginia Beach, VA—STIHL Incorporated, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, voluntarily recalled STIHL FS 310 Bike Handle Trimmer/Brushcutters due to injury hazards they pose. The CPSC announced the product safety recall, which affects approximately 1,000 units, on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010.
While the Virginia Beach-based manufacturer has yet to receive any reports of injuries in connection with the recall, the company did receive word of three incidents related to the defective product.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that vibration from the ignition module has the potential to cause the trimmer head to detach from the mounting, leaving consumers at risk of various injuries.
According to the CPSC news release, “The recalled bike handle trimmer/brushcutter has “STIHL” printed on the engine head. The model number FS 310 is located in two places, on the shaft and on the flywheel housing below the starter grip. This recall includes all units with serial numbers ranging from 27961 1030 through 27961 1119 and 27984 3607 through 27984 4556, which can be found on an adhesive label affixed to the bottom of the fuel tank and etched into the metal frame on the bottom of the engine.”
The risky trimmer/brushcutters were sold at authorized STIHL dealers nationwide between June 2009 and April 2010. The product cost about $550.
STIHL made a point to notify all known consumers by sending them letters regarding the recall after April 15, 2010. Nonetheless, individuals who purchased the potentially dangerous STIHL FS 310 Bike Handle Trimmer/Brushcutters are urged to stop using them and bring them to an authorized STIHL dealer so a new, complimentary ignition module can be installed.
