New York, NY—Yet another performer has been injured during a performance of the musical “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark,” marking the fourth injury for the play before it has officially opened. The accident occurred during a preview show on Monday, December 20, 2010, as reported by CNN.

The New York Fire Department reported that a 31-year-old performer plummeted 20 to 30 feet to the ground during the show.

Jonathan Dealwis, a New Zealand tourist who was in the audience, said the accident occurred toward the end of the show. “Spider-Man was on a bridge, and Mary Jane was dangling from it,” Dealwis said. “She drops down, as is meant to happen. Spider-Man went to the end of the bridge there. I think he was meant to sort of swoop over there, but he just fell off… The harness, you could see it just flick off his back and fly backward.”

The actor who normally plays Spider-Man, Reeve Carney, was not the one who was injured, instead the victim was one of the nine stunt men who perform Spider-Man’s stunts while masked. Officials would not confirm the identity of the victim.

The actor was alert following the fall and was rushed to a nearby hospital for observation.

The superhero musical has been plagued with accidents since the beginning. On Dec. 5, Natalie Mendoza, who plays villainous Arachne, a mythological spider creature, was injured backstage when she was hit in the head with a weighted rope, leaving her with a concussion.

Performer Kevin Aubin, who plays a “Spider-Man” stunt double, was also injured before previews even began. Aubin reportedly broke both of his wrists in a flying maneuver, when he landed incorrectly.

In addition, another performer suffered a foot injury from what was called a repetitive-motion injury from a dance move.
