Alexander County, IL—A bridge construction accident on Route 146 left a Stonefort man dead when something suddenly collapsed, trapping the man. The fatal construction accident occurred around 1:40 p.m., on Tuesday December 28, 2010, just east of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge on Route 146 near East Cape Girardeau before Route 3, as reported by KFVS.

Officials identified the victim as Zane A. Martin, 51, of Stonefort.

The accident reportedly happened in a construction area where workers were pouring concrete, when the collapse suddenly occurred.

“It appeared they were forming up a box culvert,” Mark Hasheider with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department said. “They have shoring under the rebar and then they pour concrete on that. Somehow it collapsed.”

Heartland News reported that Martin was a supervisor. The workers are employed by Jones Construction of Marion, Illinois.

Responding firefighters managed to recover the victim within 25 minutes.

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene and conduct a full investigation into the fatal construction accident.
