Greene County, MO—Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to probe a single-fatality plane crash that occurred in northwestern Greene County, about five miles east of Walnut Grove, Monday evening, Jan. 3, 2010. According to information provided by the Kansas City Star, police received word of the aviation accident at approximately 6 p.m., though it took responders nearly 45 minutes to find the wrecked aircraft.
Walnut Grove Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Kerr told reporters it took emergency crews about 45 minutes to locate the downed plane after the wreck was reported at 6 p.m.
Given that it was dark outside and no fire was sparked on impact of the crash, responders went door-to-door asking nearby residents if they heard or witnessed the aviation accident.
“They heard the plane go over and they heard a big thump… We do not think there was anyone else in the plane with him,” said Kerr. The single-engine Cessna plane crashed in close proximity to Route BB and Farm Road 75.
The pilot, who has not been identified, likely pending notification of next of kin, was killed in the Missouri plane crash. Kerr said it was not clear where the plane was headed at the time. The cause of the fatal aircraft wreck also remained unknown.
According to Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Dan Bracker, NTSB officials were expected to arrive at the scene to begin preliminary investigations on Tuesday.
