Airborne tire hits windshields, kills woman on Maryland highway

Westminster, MD— A woman was killed on a Maryland highway, after an airborne tire slammed into her vehicle’s windshield on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. The fatal automobile accident occurred just after 6 p.m., on Route 30, as reported by WBALTV.

The Maryland State Police reported that a rear tire on a northbound Chevrolet Silverado came off the truck and became airborne, hitting a southbound Mazda. After the tire struck the Mazda, it returned to the northbound lane where it hit a windshield of a Subaru Legacy.

The Subaru swerved to the right before it drove through a fence. The driver of the Subaru, identified as Elisabeth Catherine Osorio of Hanover, Pa., was killed in the collision.

The drivers of the truck and Mazda did not sustain serious injuries.

The crash is under investigation. Police are asking that anyone with information to contact the Maryland State Police.
