New Bedford, MA— An oil truck seriously injured a man in a motorized wheelchair when the truck hit the man in a crosswalk on Monday, January 10, 2011. The accident occurred in the crosswalk at Purchase and Hillman streets at around 3:25 p.m., as reported by the Boston Herald.

Accident reconstructionists for the New Bedford Police Department reported, the victim was operating his wheelchair southbound on Purchase Street, near the curb, when the oil tanker hit the man in the crosswalk. The sidewalk was apparently clear of snow at the time.

Responding emergency crews rushed the victim, identified as an 84-year-old resident of the city’s Melville Towers, by ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he was then transferred by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for further treatment. He was seriously injured in the collision.

A full investigation is underway.

On Oct. 29, another wheelchair-bound person was hit by a motor vehicle. Julio O. Andrade, 57, of New Bedford was killed when he was hit in his wheelchair at Route 6 and Pleasant Street; Andrade was one of six pedestrian fatalities in the city in 2010.
