Los Angeles, CA—Just days before the star-studded Golden Globe Awards, a multi-million dollar lawsuit was filed against the awards ceremony by their public relations firm. Cinepoint Productions claims the organizers of the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), failed to make good on its promise to renew their contract with Cinepoint, as reported by the Toronto Sun.
The $2 million lawsuit was filed on Thursday, January 13, 2011 in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Cinepoint executives assert their public relations firm, who has been employed by HFPA for 17 years, made the Golden Globes “one of the award season’s most prominent events” and landed a $26 million annual deal with major TV network NBC for HFPA, which will end in 2012.
The lawsuit claims that the HFPA failed to honor the contract renewal agreement, when it expired in 2009. The suit is seeking the $2 million to compensate what Cinepoint would have earned by renewing their contract, plus punitive damages, TMZ.com reported.
The 2011 Golden Globes are set to take place in Los Angeles on Sunday.
The renowned awards ceremony recognizes achievements in film and television.
