Dunkirk, NY—A truck driver was killed when his tractor-trailer was struck by an Amtrak passenger train in Dunkirk on Wednesday, January 12, 2011. The train crash occurred on Middle Road, as the train was headed to New York City, as reported by WGRZ.
Police officials reported a tractor-trailer hauling chickens to the Purina plant in Dunkirk apparently drove around a railroad crossing gate, subsequently colliding with an Amtrak passenger train. The collision killed the driver of the tractor-trailer.
The truck driver was identified as 51-year-old Randolph Todd of Sheppard, Texas.
None of the 236 passengers and 16 crew members were injured in the crash. The train was headed to New York City from Chicago at the time.
Amtrak passenger, Peter Fiannaca from Oneonta described the crash to On Your Side following the accident. “He describes the scene, saying the tractor trailer was essentially cut in half by the train, with pieces on each side of the track. He described the scene as ‘devastating.’ Wreckage was strewn all along the tracks.”
