Thornton, CO—A freak accident on Interstate 25 in Adams County left a woman dead when a wheel from a semi-truck came off, and struck a car traveling in the opposite direction. The fatal automobile accident occurred on Monday, January 17, 2011 on I-25, just north of 144th Avenue at around 4:19 p.m., as reported by The Denver Channel.

Thornton police reported that the two wheels on the rear of the driver’s side of the semi-truck, which was traveling southbound on I-25, came off. One of the wheels bounced over the median of the highway and struck the roof of a northbound Toyota Camry.

The impact of the wheel killed the driver, identified as a 35-year-old female from Frederick, which caused the car to veer of the right side off the road.

The second wheel came to a stop in the parking lot of JC Penney at 14658 Delaware St., on the west side of I-25, just north of the 144th Avenue interchange.

The driver of the semi-truck did stop and waited for police officers to arrive.
