Wrong-way, head-on crash killed 2 on S.R. 91 in Anaheim, Calif.

Anaheim, CA—A wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision, which left two people dead on a Southern California freeway on Wednesday, January 19, 2011. The fatal automobile accident occurred on State Route 91 (Riverside Freeway) in Anaheim at 12:47 a.m., as reported by the San Jose Mercury News.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a white Mercedes was headed west in the eastbound lanes of the highway, when the car slammed head-on into a Toyota Scion.

The collision killed the driver of the Scion, a 26-year-old Diamond Bar man, and his passenger, a 24-year-old Long Beach woman.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 21-year-old South Gate man, was rushed to the University of California, Irvine, Medical Center in critical condition by responding emergency crews.

It is unknown why the driver of the Mercedes was traveling in the wrong direction.

The identities of the victims are being withheld.

A full investigation is underway.
