Albany, NY— A debate is brewing as New York lawmakers advanced a bill that would ban electronic cigarettes. Health officials claim the E-cigarettes are “just another addictive habit,” but advocates say the devices helped them quit or cut down smoking tobacco all together, as reported by USA Today.
The battery-powered smoking device is promoted on Internet ads as having “all the pleasures of smoking without the deadly health threat.”
The bill’s sponsor decided to take action against E-cigarettes have seeing a flood of Internet ads and the device for sale at shopping malls. The sponsor wants the product banned until E-cigarettes have been studied more thoroughly and are regulated.
“E-cigarettes are for some people a tool for enabling them to continue their nicotine addictions when they are someplace where they can’t smoke. I don’t think that’s good for public health,” said Assembly Health Committee Chairman Richard Gottfried, whose panel passed the bill Tuesday.
New York lawmakers want the manufacturers to provide evidence to the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that E-cigarettes are effective in stopping smoking in order to sell them to adults.
The bill was approved in the Assembly last year but stalled in the Senate.
E-cigarettes first became available in the United States in 2006, and have since sparked a nationwide debate on their safety.
