OSHA investigating fatal construction accident in Austin; 1 killed, 1 injured

Austin, TX—A construction accident at a South Austin construction site claimed the life of one worker after falling off their makeshift scaffolding. The construction accident occurred around 4:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon, January 27, 2011 at 6212 Crow Lane off of South Congress near Stassney Lane, reported KVUE.

According to officials, two construction workers were caulking brick work around a staircase on building eight of the complex, when they fell from their makeshift scaffolding. Authorities are unsure if they men fell or the scaffolding gave way.

One worker was killed as a result of the fall and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was injured and rushed to an area hospital for treatment.

Investigators with the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) arrived at the scene just before 11:00 a.m. Friday morning to conduct investigations.

Co-workers who witnessed the accident identified the victim as Elvis Mendez, 29.

Investigations are underway.
