Van Nuys, CA—A toddler was rushed to the hospital after severing his finger while riding down a courthouse escalator with his mother on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. The incident occurred around 9 a.m., at the Van Nuys Civic Center, as reported by KTLA.
According to witnesses, the 17-month-old boy and his mother were riding down the courthouse escalator, when his left index finger became caught and severed in the comb-and-groove of the foot tread.
Responding emergency crews rushed the boy and his mother to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, while rescue teams searched for nearly 90 minutes for the rest of the boy’s finger.
The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the toddler was calm and brave when they arrived at the scene.
After taking apart the steps of the escalator, rescue teams found the finger and rushed it to the hospital. Surgeons were able to re-attach the toddler’s index finger. It is still unknown if the surgery was successful enough for the toddler to keep his finger.
