VA Work-Related Accident: City worker killed in automated trash truck accident

Norfolk, VA– A 51-year-old city worker was killed in a work-related accident involving an automated trash truck on Thursday, February 3, 2011. The fatal accident occurred sometime around 9 a.m., when a citizen alerted police of the incident in the 300 block of West Little Creek Road and Gloucester Avenue, as reported by WAVY.

Resident Shaunte Wallace said, “He was working alone. Nobody was there with him. I feel like they should always have two people.”

It is unknown how the victim, identified as Jerry Holton of Virginia Beach, was fatally injured. Responding rescue crews pronounced him dead at the scene.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy to determine Holton’s exact cause of death.

Holton left behind a wife, two children and four grandchildren.

A full investigation is underway. It is unknown if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be investigating the deadly work-related accident.
