Palm Harbor, FL—A drunk driver backed into a Pinellas Sheriff’s cruiser and another vehicle, which hospitalized three people. The fatal automobile accident occurred at US 19 and Tampa Road just after 10 p.m. Sunday, February 6, 2011, as reported by ABC Action News.

According to police officials, deputy Matt Ware and 51-year-old John Zappa, who was driving a 2006 Dodge Magnum, was stopped at a red light next to one another, when a 1998 Toyota 4-Runner hit both vehicles from behind.

The driver of the Toyota, 30-year-old Brian Jandernal, was traveling south on US 19, when he failed to stop and slammed into the police cruiser and the Dodge.

Responding emergency medical crews had to extricate Jandernal from his vehicle, before being rushed to Mease Countryside Hospital. Ware and Zappa were also taken to Mease Countryside Hospital for treatment of injuries. None of the injuries sustained in the accident are believed to be life-threatening.

Zappa’s son, 27-year-old Tyler Zappa, was in the passenger seat of the vehicle at the time, but he refused medical treatment. Jandernal had a blood alcohol of .430 and was booked into the Pinellas County Jail after being released from the hospital on Monday.

Officials say the crash was caused by failure to slow down. Jandernal was charged with two counts of DUI with property damage, 2 counts of DUI with personal injury and 1 misdemeanor DUI charge.
