Fort Lupton, CO—A pregnant Colorado woman is fearing for the health and safety of her unborn child after a pharmacist accidentally gave her an abortion drug, which could cause miscarriage and birth defects, as reported by FOX 31.
Mareena Silver of Fort Lupton was six weeks pregnant, when she was given a prescription for methotrexate, which is used to treat cancers. The medication was given to her by a Safeway pharmacist, who should have given her an antibiotic. Methotrexate is also used to abort trouble pregnancies.
The incident was a result of a mix-up with another person’s medication, who had a similar name—Maria Silva.
Silver told Fox 31, “I didn’t notice it didn’t have my name on it because the lady’s name is really similar to mine. It’s Maria and mine is Mareena.”
Silver is especially worried about the safety and health of her unborn child, and if her baby will survive this whole ordeal.
Kris Staaf, Safeway’s public affairs director, released a statement, stating, “We are very concerned about how this happened and we are conducting a full and complete investigation. Safeway has pharmacy systems and processes in place to prevent this kind of occurrence.”
