West Palm Beach, FL—The nephew of the Dalai Lama was hit and killed while walking along a Florida highway, as part of an awareness campaign of Tibet’s fight to gain independence from China. The fatal automobile accident occurred on Monday, February 14, 2011 at around 7:40 p.m., along State Road A1A, as reported by the Orlando Sentinel.
Jigme Norbu, 45, of Bloomington, Ind., the nephew of the Dalai Lama, was walking along the dark highway for what was called the Valentines Day “Walk for Tibet”, which began in St. Augustine and was scheduled to end in West Palm Beach.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Norbu was hit by an SUV driven by Keith O’Dell, 31, of Palm Coast, along A1A. O’Dell had two children inside the SUV at the time of the collision. They were not injured in the crash.
O’Dell was not charged for the accident.
According to a message posted on the Walk for Tibet website (www.ambassadorsforworldpeace.org), “although the walk included several people earlier in the day, Norbu had elected to walk an additional two miles by himself as it grew dark, sending his companions ahead in a vehicle to a restaurant.”
Norbu was the son of Taktser Rinpoche, brother of the Dalai Lama. He had a wife and three children, according to the Walk for Tibet website.
