New York, NY—(New York City injury lawyer news) A Queens man was killed and three others, including the victim’s brother, were seriously injured when a cinder-block wall collapsed at a New York City construction site Monday, Jan. 10, 2011. According to the NYC Department of Buildings, the 26-year-old victim was the first construction worker killed in a workplace accident in the city this year. Tony Sclafani, a chief spokesperson for the Department of Buildings, said a contractor received a permit for the site where the building is under construction in June 2009. Since that time, the building had six violations, such as leaving equipment on the sidewalk and failing to post appropriate signage, the New York Times reported.

According to Eugene Corcoran, a deputy commissioner for enforcement at the Buildings Department, if the concrete was applied in an improper fashion, there might have been spaces in it, which could have potentially made the cinder-block wall unstable. Reports indicated two workers were on top of the wall, which was 18 feet tall and 65 feet wide, while two others were on the ground under the scaffolding when it began to collapse around 9:30 a.m. “When the wall came down, two were on the top and they were able to ride the wall down, which probably saved their lives,” said Corcoran. On the other hand, the two men who were beneath the scaffolding were not so lucky.

One of the workers, whom police identified as Hedilberto Sanchez of Queens, went into cardiac arrest. Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel pronounced Sanchez, a husband and father of two, dead en route to Elmhurst Hospital Center. The victim’s sister, Angelina Sanchez said his wife, Mirella Alvarado was expecting their third child. “I don’t have words to describe how I feel,” Angelina said tearfully. The three other workers, including Hedilberto Sanchez’s brother, Miguel, reportedly suffered trauma and fractures in the Queens construction accident. Miguel Sanchez and the other unidentified workers were rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where they were listed in serious but stable condition. Investigations into the deadly New York City construction accident were expected to be underway.
