Manhattan, NY— A massive chain-reaction crash inside of the Lincoln Tunnel injured 60 people, 14 seriously, on Thursday, February 24, 2011. Three commuter buses and a motorcycle collided in the Manhattan-bound center tube of the tunnel at around 7:27 a.m., reported NJ.com and the Daily News.
According to reports, a motorcycle was riding between two of the buses, when the first bus stopped for traffic. The second bus then hit the motorcyclist, throwing the biker from the motorcycle and underneath the second bus.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said roughly 13 bus riders were “seriously” injured.
Two of the buses involved in the crash were New Jersey Transit buses – the Nos. 116 from Perth Amboy and 139 from Lakewood. The third bus was a Monsey Tours bus.
Responding emergency crews rushed the motorcyclist to Bellevue Hospital where he was incubated. The 13 bus riders who sustained serious injuries were rushed to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York.
The Weehawken Volunteer Ambulance Squad, eight ambulances from the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue, responded to the rescue efforts.
The center tube was shut down as a result of crash, causing a massive gridlock in Weehawken and along Route 3 and arteries leading to the Holland Tunnel.
A full investigation into the wreck is underway.
