6 injured in blast at ATK Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence, MO

Independence, MO– Six people were injured in an explosion at the ATK Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence on Tuesday, March 1, 2011. The explosion has shut down the entire building from Tuesday night through at least Wednesday’s day shift, reported NBC Action News.

According to a company statement, the incident occurred in a construction area of the plant. A worker at the plant stated that the blast occurred where they load powder into the bullets.

Six people were injured, and one person had to be airlifted by an air ambulance to a nearby hospital, reported an official at ATK Armament Systems. The nature of the victim’s injuries was not reported.

The United Army, ATK safety teams and local authorities are investigating the industrial accident.

NBC Action News reported that “ATK Armament Systems is the world’s largest manufacturer of military ammunition and integrated medium-caliber gun systems. It is one of four business structures operating under the company name ATK. A second ATK Armament Systems plant in Radford, Virginia produces rocket and gun propellants and other energetics materials.”
