Framingham, MA—Drag racing is the suspected cause of a head-on crash that involved a Massachusetts State Trooper early Wednesday, March 9, 2011. The automobile accident occurred on Route 30 in Framingham at around 1:10 a.m., as reported by the Boston Globe.
According to investigators, a Hyundai Tiburon and a Honda Civic were driving side-by-side at a high rate of speed along Route 30, when the Hyundai slammed into the police cruiser. The officer had reportedly just assisted another trooper in a traffic stop, when he pulled onto Route 30 and was hit by the Hyundai, which had crossed the center line. Investigators believe the Honda may also have hit the patrol car.
Framingham resident Alejandro Ramos, 27, the driver of the Hyundai, sustained critical injuries, while the veteran state trooper, Sergeant Edward Treseler, 54, walked away from the accident nearly unscathed. Ramos was Medflighted to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Falcaneri P. Fuentes, 31, of Framingham, the driver of the Honda, was not injured, nor was his passenger, Yenci Pineda, 19.
Investigators are currently trying to determine if the two cars were drag racing prior to the crash. At this time neither of the drivers have been charged, but officials say both men will be criminally summonsed for operating to endanger, speeding, marked lane violation and operating without a license.
Investigations are underway.
At least 10 troopers have been involved in crashes in the past 14 months, Marian J. McGovern, superintendent of the State Police said.
