New Brunswick, NJ— Two people were killed and some 40 others were rushed to hospitals after a tour bus crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike on Monday night, March 14, 2011. The fatal bus accident occurred at around 9:00 p.m., as the bus was headed south on the turnpike from New York City’s Chinatown to Philadelphia, reported the New York Times.

According to officials the bus, which is operated by Super Luxury Tours of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., drove into the median on the New Jersey Turnpike, then hit a part of an overpass before swerving and slamming into an embankment on the side of the highway.

The impact of the crash ejected the 50-year-old bus driver out the front window. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, reported State Police.

About 40 passengers were rushed to area hospitals by responding emergency crews. At least six victims were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where one of the injured victims died.

There reportedly was about 44 or 45 people aboard the bus at the time.

State Police are still trying to determine the cause of the crash. A full investigation is underway.
