Lafayette Parish, LA—A 6-year-old boy sustained fatal head injuries after being dragged by a school bus on Monday morning, March 14, 2010. The fatal school bus accident occurred during a regular stop on Duhon Road as the bus was on its way to Milton Elementary, reported The Daily Advertiser.
According to officials, Lederion Miller was being picked up by the school bus with several other children when Miller somehow became caught on the outside of the door, or the arm of the bus. Apparently Miller was trying to get on the on the bus as the driver, Harold Thibeaux, was closing its doors and didn’t notice the child.
Miller was subsequently dragged for about 20 feet until he fell to the road.
Miller was rushed by responding emergency crews to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his life-threatening head injuries.
Thibeaux was given a breathalyzer test, in which he passed at 0.00. He has reportedly been a contract driver with the school system for about 20 years.
The accident and the circumstances are still under investigation. No charges or citations have been filed at this time.
Lafayette Parish School System officials released the following statement:
“The loss this morning of one of our kindergarten students in a bus accident has hit us hard. The people who make up the Lafayette Parish School System work for children. To lose a child so young and in such a terribly tragic way is very difficult for all of us. We are doing our best to support this child’s classmates and the faculty and staff at his school. As a group, we extend our most heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of our student.”
