Middleton, MA — An explosion at a chemical plant rocked the surrounding community and injured four people Sunday evening, March 13, 2011. The blast occurred just before 8 p.m. at the Bostik Chemical Plant in Middleton, reported WHDH.
According to officials, it is still largely unknown what caused the explosion.
“We’re not in a position now to share any preliminary cause or to suggest much more about the details of the chemical process that was taking place at the time of the incident,” said Stephen Coan, Mass. State Fire Marshal.
Residents near the plant described the explosion as a sonic boom that could be felt for miles.
Four people, three men and one woman, were injured in the blast. The victims were rushed to an area hospital where a decontamination tent was constructed. All four victims were treated and released.
Authorities are now monitoring the air and water qualities for concerns of chemicals that may have leaked from the plant. Several homes around the plant use wells for their water supply.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the US Chemical Safety Board are investigating.
