Suffolk, VA — A head-on collision involving a van and a school bus injured 15 people on Thursday morning, March 17, 2011. The automobile accident occurred at the intersection of East Washington and Carver Avenue in Suffolk at around 8:20 a.m., reported WAVY.

According to officials, the driver of the minivan, Josette A. Winfield of Corapeake, N.C., fell asleep behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer across the double lines and into incoming traffic where she collided head-on into the school bus. The impact of the crash smashed in both front ends of the vehicles.

The school bus was reportedly transporting 25 students, grades 2 through 5, to Driver Elementary school at the time of the crash.

The collision left the bus driver with minor injuries and caused at least half a dozen students to be taken to a hospital to be checked out. All of the students were treated and released.

Winfield sustained serious injuries, which are not considered to be life-threatening. Responding emergency crews airlifted to an area hospital for treatment. Winfield’s two children, a 5-year-old and a 7-month-old who were also inside the van, was also taken to a Suffolk-area hospital for treatment. The children’s injuries were not life-threatening.
