Bunnell, FL — A pilot was killed in a fiery crash during the 2nd Annual Wings of Flagler air show on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The fatal plane crash occurred around 4:30 p.m., at the Flagler County Airport, reported CNN.
According to officials, the pilot, William E. Walker, 58, of Cookeville, Tennsessee, was flying a Russian military plane when he broke from formation and plummeted to the ground.
“During the aerial demonstration, the pilot lost control of the aircraft by unknown reasons,” the Florida Highway Patrol press release stated.
Walker was flying the plane about a half-mile from spectators, when the 1983 Aerostar YAK-51 Russian military trainer aircraft crashed and burst into flames. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one else was injured in the accident.
The rest of the Saturday air show was canceled following the aviation accident.
The highway patrol stated that the plane crash was not alcohol related.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the plane wreck.
