Macon, GA — Twenty people were taken to area hospitals after a charter bus carrying Gwinnett County high school students was involved in a traffic accident in South Georgia. The automobile accident occurred on I-75 around 3 p.m. at mile post 116, reported the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
The Harmon Brothers Tour bus was transporting 52 people, including 47 students, from Mill Creek High School when traffic in the northbound lanes began to slow down and a rear-end collision occurred in front of the bus. One vehicle involved in the rear-end collision was pushed into the path of the charter bus, causing the driver to swerve and drive up on an embankment where it hit an overpass.
Responding emergency crews airlifted one person to the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon for treatment, while 19 other victims were taken to Dooly County hospitals for treatment. The victim who was airlifted is currently in stable condition. The statuses of the other injured victims were not released.
The uninjured occupants of the bus were taken to the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office to wait for another bus.
The collision occurred in a construction zone, according to 13WMAZ.
A full investigation is underway.
