Holmby Hills, CA — The presence of Legionella bacteria was confirmed in a whirlpool spa at the Playboy Mansion by the Los Angeles County Health Department, who launched an investigation after hundreds of people fell ill after attending or working a party at the ionic mansion last month, reported KTLA.
According to officials, about 200 people became sick following the DOMAINFest Global Conference, which took place on Feb. 1-3.
On the third night of the conference, the finale party was held at the Playboy Mansion and within 48 hours after the party was over, several attendees experienced symptoms of fever, respiratory problems and violent headaches.
Legionella bacteria causes Legionnaires’ disease, which creates symptoms of coughing, chills and fever. Legionnaires’ disease, or Pontiac fever, has been suspected in the outbreak, but health officials have not ruled out other bacteria or viruses. Pontiac fever is a mild form of legionellosis, in which the severe form is known as Legionnaires’ disease.
Some of the sickened attendees believe the fog machine that was used at the party caused them to become ill.
“There is no truth in the rumor that anyone caught anything at the Playboy Mansion, nor is there any evidence,” a rep for Playboy told the New York Post. “None of the Playboy staff became ill, the deejay was in the middle of the fog and she didn’t get ill. We have been contacted by the Health Department and the Playboy Mansion is cooperating fully with the investigation.”
Investigations are underway.
